Using the Bookmarklet (toolbar button)
The MetaWishlist bookmarklet allows you to add items from any site with the click of a button!
A “bookmarklet” is a term used for
an item in your browser’s bookmarks which interacts in some way
with the page that you are currently looking at. MetaWishlist.com uses a
bookmarklet to add the item on the page you’re looking at to your
MetaWishlist without interfering with your browsing! You can actually
add the MetaWishlist bookmarklet to your browser’s toolbar, so
adding a new item to your list is just one click away! All you need
to do is drag the link below to your browser’s Links toolbar. Once
the bookmarklet is on your toolbar, all you need to do is click on it
when you’re at an item that you’d like to add to your wishlist,
anywhere on the internet!
If you’re having trouble installing the bookmarklet, follow these instructions:
- Click on the above link with your left mouse button and hold it down
- Move your mouse to your browser’s “Links” toolbar and release the mouse button
- Notice that you may need to drop the link in between two existing links
If you are still having trouble,
right-click on the above link and select “Add to Favorites” or
“Bookmark This Link…” depending on your browser. If you get a
security warning, hit “OK.” For Internet Explorer users, choose
to create the bookmark in your “Links” folder. For Firefox users,
choose to create the link in your “Bookmarks Toolbar Folder”
folder.
In Internet Explorer, if you can't find your Links toolbar,
it may be hidden like the image to the right. So, you’ll need to move it to where it is
visible. To do this, right-click somewhere on the toolbar and
unselect “Lock the Toolbars.” Then, find the small “Links”
label (probably on the right hand side) and drag it to below your
address bar (where you type in web addresses).
You should now be able
to see all the bookmarks in you “Links” folder. If you’d like,
you can re-lock the toolbar by right-clicking and selecting “Lock
the Toolbars.” If you don’t see the MetaWishlist bookmarklet in
the “Links” toolbar now, click the link and drag it to the
toolbar again. The finished product should look something like the image to the left.
If you are still having problems installing the bookmarklet, please don't hessitate to Contact us.
Using the Add/Edit Item Page
The Add/Edit Item page allows you the painlessly add a new item to your MetaWishlist or edit an existing item.
Quick tips:
-
Use the MetaWishlist bookmarklet! Adding the bookmarklet to your browser's
bookmarks is by far the easiest method of adding an item to your MetaWishlist!
- Use Tags to make your items easy to find by you and others!
-
Let the page do all the hard work for you! If you enter the Vendor Url and press the Fetch Data
button (the bookmarklet does this automatically for you), all the images and prices from the vendor's site will be found for you! All you need to do is press the drop-down arrow
button
to see all the found prices and images.
-
Add your items to a list! It's not required, but very helpful to add your items to specific list. For instance, I might make a "Christmas" list, "Birthday" list, and a "New Computer Parts" list. You can add items to
an existing list by selecting the list from the List drop-down (using the
button).
You'll notice that your most recently used list will be automatically selected. If you would like to create a new list to add
this item to, just type in the new list name in the List field and a new list will be created with your new item in it.
Tags can be thought of as categories or keywords.
A MetaWishlist item can have an infinite number of tags. Assigning tags to your items allows you to have a high degree of organization.
No only can you assign an item to a specific list (ie. “Birthday List”), but you can assign each item different keywords.
You can easily get to all your items with a specific tag easily from your home page.
You can also browse all the items with a specific tag from every user on the site (look at Everyon's Tags).
Adding tags to your item is a piece of cake. In the Tags field on the Add/Edit Item page,
you can specify as many tags as you’d like. Separate each tag by a space, and
if you’re tag has multiple words in it, put quotes around it.
For instance,
if I was adding the new U2 CD to my list, I’d probably use tags like: music cd u2 "brit rock" (Sorry, "Brit Rock" was the genre assigned to U2 in
Real Rhapsody and we
needed an example of a tag in quotes!). If that was the only item that I had added, my Tags section on my home page would look the the image on the right. Notice that each tag has (1) item in it, which in this case are all
the same item.
